The New Workplace Philosophy
Environments for the Knowledge Intensive Workplace

The requirements of the knowledge intensive workplace are radically different than those of the industrial workplace.  Human capital is the primary resource.   But what is necessary to maximize this resource?  Why not create areas that are adaptable to the tasks on a one-second, one-minute, one-hour level of adjustment?  Why not create areas in which the architecture changes to support the work?

A rich, varied environment, with ample communication, continuous learning, rapid feedback, knowledge management, and readily available tools are key to eliminating the barriers to human creativity and increasing productivity. Flexible space, open areas, new types of furniture and complex technological systems increase the amount of informal communication that is necessary to develop communities of practice and build networks.  There is inherent value in  people from all levels of the organization working in close proximity to each other. In designing this new type of environment, we must go beyond incremental or even major changes to existing workplace designs.  We need something unique, innovative, totally new.

MG Taylor has taken a  body of ideas, adapted them, applied them to actual work with clients, refined them and has proven they work in our Management and Navigation Centers.  Among leading-edge management theorists, MG Taylor has a reputation for being years ahead in applying information and systems theory to the daily management concerns.  Because our approach has been one of coming from the future and anticipating product potentials, we are several years ahead of organizations who develop a product only after the market expresses a need for it.

Athenaeum International designs environments that best suit those processes.  We design from unique and powerful understanding of the creative process and of methods that support high performance within organizations.  We build environments which  allow users to manage the environment specifically to support the creative process.

In these designs, small things are very critical.  An insignificant flaw in a "normal" workplace may be a "disappointment" but only that.  In a highly interactive and complex environment, this same error may constitute a major functional block to the accomplishment of its mission.  Every consideration in the design, construction, and use of our environments is driven by an informed model of its consequences on the user's processes.

The mission of the Taylor management Centers is to provide individuals and organizations with new ways of working, and to redesign and re-equip the human workplace to operate effectively in the Information Age.
