Now
is the time to embrace the invisible. For such a little act of faith,
space awaits, filled with possibilities. What if we slip out of the curvature
of space, out into its far reaches? What if, once there, we adjust our
eyes magically to the invisible world? There we will see a plentitude of
structure--potential structure, emerging structure--and we will stop doubting...

Located
in an area known for innovative approaches to business, the Palo Alto knOwhere
Store is an important element in demonstrating MG Taylor's vision of the
21st Century work place. It accommodates large group functions such as
DesignShop events, retail sales, and "hotelling" with the added feature
of areas in which those using the hotelling space can do collaborative
work. The flexible, adaptable elements allow groups ranging from 10 to
100 to feel surrounded by a space custom designed for their work, while
individuals work in privacy and quiet in personal spaces.
The
environment was designed to reach out to the community. It is located
in a store space with a glass front that allows the light to pour onto
the activities taking place inside. Mothers, small children, business
people, and tourists are fascinated by the retail displays and the Pod
work area that is the centerpiece in the door way. The armature reflects
the lightness of the artist's loft or the theater's "back of the house"
suggesting the creativity we wish to inspire. One client stood for a long
time on the outside looking in. When a staff member invited him to
enter, he said, "In this place, I feel like I am coming home."

their futures.
...Vision--the
need for organizational clarity about purpose and direction--is a wonderful
candidate for field theory. If vision is a field, think about what
we could do differently to create one. We would do our best to get
it permeating through the entire organization so that we could take advantage
of its formative properties. Creating the field through the dissemination
of those ideas is essential. Every employee has energy to contribute;
in a field-filled space, there are no unimportant players.
