What is common to all humans in history is problems, problems, and more
problems. If you are good at problem solving, you do not eventually
arrive at utopia...you get ever more difficult, more comprehensive, more
incisively stated problems.
R. Buckminster Fuller, 1992
NASA's
Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, a world-recognized leader
in aviation research, was facing a time of budget reductions and deteriorating
facilities which resulted in inefficient systems. They recognized
that time was running out. In an MG Taylor facilitated DesignShop session,
NASA participants designed a method of operating more effectively.
Soon after the DesignShop event ended, the plan was put into action.
Working in the Langley Navigation Center, employees directly addressed
the issues and redesigned the systems surrounding their work. Located in
a building which formerly housed a working wind tunnel, the Navigation
Center workspace facilitates continued improvement in a flexible adaptable,
pleasant space.
Key
to the organization's process improvement is integrated scheduling and
long-term planning. ANDMapsTM (Annotated
Network Diagram Maps) were developed to bring powerful graphic language
to planning and project management using WorkWallTM
units and personal computers. They show the relationships
between activities and their dependencies on each other. ANDMaps and other
forms of display which allow a large number of people to see the same ideas
at the same time power the NASA Wind Tunnel Reengineering Project which
has brought about significant savings to taxpayers.
