Architecture
is the integration of form and space and the principles that
control their organization. These elements are the basis of a pattern
language which enables the space to harmonize with its surroundings
and still cater to its inhabitant's unique needs. What is new is
the idea that a work of architecture can also be a productive tool
of human economy. Emerging with this, is the idea that the workplace
can be an expression of living art and that this is not only possible
but necessary in today's world.
The
workplace is the expression of the work process, style, purpose
and organization of those who build and use it. We now know that
through physical comfort, exposure to variety in the environment
and increased informal communication, innovative environments do
have a marked positive impact. Why not use this powerful tool of
the environment to advantage? Why not make the building a tool for
wealth production?
Together
with
MG Taylor Corporation, Athenaeum International, has made an
active, aggressive search for an understanding of how environment
effects people. We have used this knowledge and have applied these
principles to making the workplace work.
"I
believe that the corporate environment has changed so swiftly
and fundamentally in the past two decades that structures
designed for success in an industrial environment are almost
by definition inappropriate today."
-Alvin Toffler, 1985 |
In
a world of exponentially growing complexity and change, Athenaeum
International's environments are designed, built and managed to
remove every possible block from individual and group creativity
and productivity. They are environments where the pace and productivity
of work can be accelerated to meet and exceed the changes happening
in the world. In addition, they are environments where the pace
can be slowed to provide prospect and refuge for the contemplation
time necessary for creative activity. The environment adjusts to
the work being performed instead of the users adjusting to the arbitrary
constraints of a fixed layout.
In
the complex design and construction necessary to meet these goals,
the expertise from many disciplines has to be integrated into one
functioning whole. The result has to serve the client's preset requirements,
to challenge the users to evolve to their full capabilities, and
to remain viable through the entire life-cycle of the building.
