Timeless Way of Building
Christopher Alexander

The Timeless Way of Building is the introductory volume in the Center for Environmental Structure Series.  It presents a new theory of architecture, building, and planning which has, at its core, that age-old process by which the people of a society have always pulled the order of their world from their own being.  A building or a town will only be alive to the extent that it is governed by the timeless way--a quality without a name. Tee patterns of architecture and events are interlocked to bring this to life.  To the extent that they are alive, they let loose our inner forces and set us free, eliminating the inner conflict caused by dead, sterile spaces.  When a building has this fire, it becomes a part of nature, like the ocean waves or blades of grass; governed, at the same time, by endless repetition and limitless variety.  We must work our way toward this shared language and reestablish the timeless way--the rich complexity of patterns that nurtures us and released the fundamental order so natural to us.
