The
design of a desk or a work station is a very powerful determinant of how
productive--or not--a person can be. Desks are designed to support
only writing; computer workstations are designed to support only full attention
o the computer. The information worker's needs are much greater.
She or he uses information of all forms: computer displays, books or drafts,
written, graphic, financial and other spread sheets, data bases and possibly
video. The built-in difficulty of moving from one room to another
impeded productivity and creativity. A key element in the work station
concept is that it is designed to simultaneously allow display of many
related chunks of information. it integrates all media that
the information worker uses and provides a variety of ways to display the
output of those media.
The goal of AI's workstation design is to produce a work station which systematically removes the blocks to the creative process, and the difficulty of integrating information from different sources. One of the things that a highly customized workstation can provide a worker is a sense of real control over the work process. This control is also manifested by work equipment that does not look exactly like everyone else's. Like clothing, it can be tailored to express our sense of ourselves and provide a comfortable fit to how we accomplish our work. The work station can support the worker, bringing organization and clarity to what feels like chaos by providing an easily configurable space in which the worker lives.
A person may belong to a number of teams and his or her physical presence will be required in different locations for longer periods of time than is presently the case using the concept of meetings. There fore, a worker may have a home base work area, but also maintain several other temporary work areas, as well as virtual work areas via networking, computer conferencing, and teleconferencing. The worker's station should be highly mobile in order to support these activities. This includes portable work surfaces, storage and display. The work stations have to be flexible enough to adapt to a variety of work, and to reconfigure as necessary to meet the needs of the task at hand.
